The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Follows Poor Response

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a more defined direction.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Key Recruitment

This announcement follows a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the complete text from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I understand you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a more distinct vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to mind and reimagined the title with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our players.

Our confidence in this project increases every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. Following some time of discussions, Ben starts with us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having devoted the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in greeting Ben soon. We are all eager to persist witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.

Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. Then, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, challenges, and tests that shift every session. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."

The game lacks an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as creation continues.
