Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
