RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
