The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
